Breaking the Silence on Mental Health & Suicide: Lisa's Story

In this episode, I had the absolute honor of talking with Lisa Sugarman, an author, columnist, and fierce mental health advocate. She’s also a crisis counselor with The Trevor Project and a storyteller with NAMI, helping to break the stigma around mental health and suicide.

Lisa’s story truly moved me. When she was just 10 years old, she lost her dad and was told he had died of a heart attack. But years later, she learned the truth that he had died by suicide. That moment changed everything for her. Instead of hiding from it, she chose to share her story and help others do the same.

Talking to Lisa opened my eyes to how important it is to have honest conversations about mental health, especially with family. She reminded me that silence fuels shame, but speaking up creates healing. Her courage, wisdom, and heart made this episode one of the most powerful ones yet.
